"When math and food collide you get a visually stunning and aromatic explosion of culinary success in mass quantities," said Taste of Math co-chair Sandra Cervantes. "Chefs delighted the taste buds of all in attendance and helped to show how math is used in a variety of ways." ## At the Intersection of Food and Math As our guests sipped and savored their way among our star culinary partners, they got a glimpse into how math brings food and flavors to life.   Thank you to our culinary partners who worked with us to create unique mathematical experiences! - [Dr. Eugenia Cheng](http://www.mindresearch.org/mathfair/pdf/ChefProfile_Cheng.pdf), brought to us by Pizzeria Mozza, explored mobius strip pizza. - [Chef Leo Razo](http://www.mindresearch.org/mathfair/pdf/ChefProfile_Razo.pdf) of Villa Roma showcased radians through empanadas. - [Chef Steven Kim](http://www.mindresearch.org/mathfair/pdf/ChefProfile_Kim.pdf) of Crazy Rock'n Sushi, explored reuleaux shapes with sushi. - [Dr. and Chef Hari and Dr. and Sommelier Jenneffer Pulapaka](http://www.mindresearch.org/mathfair/pdf/ChefProfile_Pulapaka.pdf) of Cress Restaurant shared the mathematics of unique pairings you wouldn't expect to go together. - [Chefs Scott and Diana McDonough](http://www.mindresearch.org/mathfair/pdf/ChefProfile_McDonough.pdf) of Le Petite Spoon asked: what does math taste like? - Chef Marco Zapien of Zapien's Salsa Grill & Taqueria invited guests to measure the heat of various salsas. - Campbell Soup Company shared why real food matters. - Cielito Lindo presented the math of proofs in alcohol volume. - The Dirty Cookie explored shapes and volume. - Fuddruckers tackled exponential growth with slider combos. - Student chefs from Valley High School Inc. discussed shapes and volume. - Mother's Market & Kitchen featured what makes food healthy. - Spectra Catering explored "perfect" numbers and measurements. - Sub Zero showcased temperature measurement in ice cream creation. - Tacos and Co. connected parallel processing to taco creation. >   > > [A photo posted by Eating Around So Cal (@eatingaround)](https://www.instagram.com/p/BMacAOhhQKB/) on Nov 4, 2016 at 8:17pm PDT *Chef Steven Kim from Crazy Rock'n Sushi illustrated the mathematics of reuleaux squares in this unique sushi creation.* ## **Presenting the Taste of Math Honorees** As part of the evening's events, we awarded three very special partners who have made a huge impact on our organization as well as math education.  ###### **Champion of Education Award: Lisa Gonzales-Solomon, Principal, Madison Elementary** Throughout her 26 years as an educator and principal in Santa Ana Unified, Lisa Gonzales-Solomon has committed herself to providing her students with the education they deserve: an exceptional one. Her efforts were recognized last year, as she was named Elementary Principal of the Year in Orange County by the Association of California School Administrators, and a National Distinguished Principal for California by the National Association of Elementary School Principals. But her extraordinary work also extends beyond the classroom, where she works with groups such as the Assistance League of Santa Ana and CENA ensuring that students are ready to start their school year with uniforms and school supplies and food for the holidays. Since then, Hyundai has expanded the company’s commitment to elevating math achievement nationally and has partnered with MIND to reach 100 schools by 2018 through the [Hyundai ST Math Initiative](http://www.mindresearch.org/hyundailovesjiji/). To-date, Hyundai education partners include District of Columbia Public Schools, Oakland Unified School District, The School District of Philadelphia, and Pinellas County Schools (FL), among others. In addition to making a $1 million pledge to MIND in 2015, Hyundai created the Hyundai-MIND Math Initiative Advisory Board to support the partnership’s focus on addressing the high school dropout crisis through strategic investments in key areas of the country. While teaching, Marian proved wrong the prevailing notion that many children were incapable of success by actively engaging her students in hands-on, project-based learning. When she became a state senator in 1984, she became the first woman to have served in both houses of the California legislature. Throughout her years in politics, she remained actively involved in education issues, and an elementary school in Laguna Niguel was named after her in 1986. In 1996, she was appointed California State Secretary of Education. It was during her service as Secretary of Education that she was introduced to MIND Research Institute and subsequently joined its board of directors.
